Designed by renowned Alvaro Siza’s son, Tólo House is a remarkable piece to study. The effect of a continuous cascade flowing along the sloped hill on Ribeira da Pena provides a singular example of how to adapt to the site.

This vacation residence is created as a north-south link through the sloped and narrow site. The communication is possible throughout a series of both interior and exterior stairs interrupted by either rooms or platforms.

Even if the residence is composed as a whole, its exterior appearance seems fragmented. Due to the great height difference it is necessary to create a series of prismatic volumes, which contain the different rooms and are oriented according to the function developed in the inside. The house is organized from the main access on the top in a sequence from a more public to a more private use; meaning from the kitchen, dining, living to the bedrooms which will be aside from the main path.

The material employed on the exterior is reinforced concrete, which together with the topography creates a resemblance to a rocky path common in this area. On the contrary, the interior is designed as a neat space thanks to the wood and the white color of the paint.

The idea of this project could be defined as a rocky cascade interrupted with several platforms and rooms; which nevertheless is perceived as continuous both in the inside and the outside and adapts to the site, the function and the aesthetics.
