McCormick Tribune Campus Centre_OMA

This building, finished on 2003, is located at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago and represents the campus centre. The MTCC has various aims: being the student life centre, taking up an empty lot which was isolated and used as parking lot and bringing life to it again and improving the urbanism of the campus assimilating it to Mies’s proposal; and last, absorbing the Commons Building by Mies van der Rohe which was completely isolated and disintegrated from the campus until this intervention.

OMA locates the building right underneath the elevated train rails (L) and surrounds it with a soundproofed stainless steel tube, so inside the building the train noise is really reduced. Inside it, there is a very varied program: auditorium, student offices and associations, copy and printing centre, IIT shop, the food court, a food shop and many places for the students to interact and relax. Summing up, it is a building for and to students. All this different functions are developed in a single story which section enlarges or shortens in order to create different spaces by level separation instead of walls, which connects the spaces visually.

From an urban point of view, OMA studied the students’ movements around the campus and the most used routes that came out of the study are literally translated to the plan. This fact helps the interconnection between the buildings were classes are held and those that house the student’s residences and fraternities and the fitness centre.

Inside the building, its different and vivid textures and colours really make a contrast with the austerity of the remaining building of the campus, giving it more importance among them and making it closer to students.
